The BJP named Rukmini Mallick in a statement issued by its central election committee from Delhi on Sunday afternoon
Actress-turned-politician Rukmini Mallick, who is popularly known as Koel Mallick, recently came close to the BJP from the Trinamool Congress. She resigned as a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP in July this year, which left the seat vacant, necessitating a by-election.
Koel Mallick made surprise transition from the Bengali film industry to active politics when Mamata Banerjee nominated her as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha.
The announcement comes after discussions within the ruling alliance
The nomination of former Trinamool Congress MPs to Rajya Sabha has sparked a debate about “Trinamoolisation of the BJP” with a section of party leaders saying that the party was accommodating those who faught against the BJP before the party came to power in WB.
Polling will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on October 16, followed by the counting of votes on the same day.
